    Tanilba House

Tanilba House, constructed in the early 1830s, is a significant colonial homestead located in Tanilba Bay, Port Stephens, New South Wales. Built by convicts for Lieutenant William Caswell, a retired English naval officer, it stands as one of the oldest original residences in the region. The name “Tanilba” is derived from an Indigenous word meaning “place of white flowers,” likely referring to the flannel flowers that once covered the area.

The homestead is notable for its robust construction, featuring half-meter-thick stone walls made from locally quarried quartz porphyry. The lime mortar used in the construction was produced on-site by burning oyster shells, a testament to the resourcefulness of early settlers. The property encompasses three acres of mature gardens, including a 30-meter-long wisteria-covered arbour with stone pillars, a circular stone driveway with imposing entry columns added in the 1920s, and two approximately 160-year-old fig trees forming a unique “fig tree cathedral” ceremony area.

Throughout its history, Tanilba House has undergone various transformations. In the 1920s, property developer Henry F. Halloran acquired the estate and introduced several architectural features, including ornate gates, fences, and the adjoining “temple,” enhancing its grandeur. In the mid-20th century, the property served as a guest house and riding school under the management of Helena Oberland. Recognizing its historical significance, the state government placed a permanent conservation order on Tanilba House in 1980. Since 2017, current owners Glenn Short and Deirdre Hall have been dedicated to restoring the homestead and its extensive grounds, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, Tanilba House offers a range of services, including boutique weddings, traditional high teas, group tours, and accommodation in the refurbished two-bedroom maids’ quarters. The estate’s rich history and picturesque setting make it a sought-after venue for special events and a significant landmark in the region.
